Inhaled corticosteroids are commonly used for long-term control of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These medications act directly on the airway mucosa; if the mouth is not thoroughly cleansed after use, residual medication suppresses the local immune response and significantly increases the risk of oral candidiasis (thrush). Rinsing the mouth and spitting out the water is the clinically recognized, most effective preventive strategy.
