A nurse is assessing a 2-year-old child at a wellness visit. Which finding should the nurse identify as a safety concern?
- AChild uses a forward-facing car seat✓
- BChild is playing with wooden blocks
- CChild drinks milk from a cup
- DChild sleeps with a small blanket
Child safety is a key focus of pediatric nursing. According to recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), young children should remain in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible, because a rear-facing seat supports the child's head, neck, and spine during a crash and distributes the force evenly. The cervical spine of a 2-year-old is not yet fully developed; if a forward-facing car seat is used too early, the inertial forward motion of the head during a collision can easily cause severe cervical spine injury or death. Therefore, the use of a forward-facing car seat at this age is considered a behavior that falls short of the safety standard.
