Acute cholecystitis is commonly caused by inflammation due to gallstone obstruction of the cystic duct. The typical clinical presentation is right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain, often radiating to the right shoulder or the inferior angle of the right scapula; this phenomenon is called referred pain and originates from reflex stimulation of the phrenic nerve by the inflamed gallbladder. The nurse should perform a detailed assessment of the pain location and observe for accompanying fever or nausea and vomiting.
