A nurse is caring for a client who is post-operative following a hip arthroplasty. Which action by the nurse will best reduce the risk of postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
- AAdminister prophylactic antibiotics as scheduled
- BApply sequential compression devices to the lower extremities✓
- CEncourage the client to remain on bed rest to prevent hip dislocation
- DKeep the head of the bed elevated at 45 degrees
The core of DVT prevention is increasing venous return from the lower extremities. Sequential compression devices (SCDs) improve venous stasis through mechanical compression and are the standard physical measure for reducing postoperative thrombus formation. Postoperatively, early ambulation should be encouraged rather than prolonged bed rest. Antibiotics are used to prevent infection, not DVT. Elevating the head of the bed has no direct clinical benefit for thrombus prevention.
