Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside with positive inotropic and negative chronotropic effects. Before administration the nurse must count the apical pulse for a full minute. Hold the dose for an adult apical rate <60 bpm (or <90-110 in infants/children per parameters) and notify the prescriber, because digoxin may cause severe bradycardia and arrhythmias. BP, respiratory rate, and temperature are not the primary safety parameters for digoxin.
