A client is prescribed furosemide 40 mg IV push. Which nursing action is essential before administering this medication?
- AVerify the client's fasting status
- BCheck the client's current potassium level✓
- CObtain a baseline coagulation profile
- DAssess the client's blood glucose level
Furosemide is a potent diuretic that causes urinary potassium loss; long-term or high-dose use can readily produce hypokalemia. Low serum potassium increases the risk of digoxin toxicity and can precipitate life-threatening dysrhythmias. Verifying the serum potassium level before administration is therefore a standard safety check. If the value is below 3.5 mEq/L, the nurse should hold the medication and consult the physician. This is critical for preventing medication-induced electrolyte complications.
