When assisting a hemiplegic client with ambulation, the nurse should stand on the affected (right) side to provide support. The client must wear non-slip footwear and a gait belt should be used as a safety measure. The nurse should encourage participation of the affected limb while making use of the stronger (left) side for support. Movements must be slow to prevent orthostatic hypotension; the client should not rise quickly.
