Sublingual nitroglycerin must dissolve under the tongue for rapid mucosal absorption (it cannot be swallowed). Tablets must be stored in their original dark glass container because nitroglycerin degrades with light exposure. If chest pain persists after one tablet, the client should call 911 immediately (possible MI). A slight tingling sensation indicates the tablet is still potent.
