— Explanation ·
Clostridium difficile (C. diff) is a spore-forming bacterium, and its spores are highly resistant to alcohol. Commercially available alcohol-based hand sanitizers cannot kill the spores; if only hand sanitizer is used, the spores will remain on the hands and cause subsequent cross-contamination. Therefore, after caring for a client with C. diff, the nurse must perform mechanical washing with soap and water to physically remove the spores through friction.
