Keeping items above waist level ensures the operator can continuously monitor sterile items and avoid accidental contact contamination. Reaching across the sterile field, looking away, or placing non-sterile items at the edge all break the sterile barrier and increase the risk of healthcare-associated infection. Clinically, the nurse must remain vigilant; if the sterile field's status is in doubt, it should be considered contaminated and re-prepared.
