Whether performed with an alcohol-based hand rub or with soap and water, hand hygiene effectively interrupts cross-transmission of pathogens via the hands of healthcare workers. Sterile gloves are reserved for specific aseptic techniques and are not required in all care situations, and alcohol-based sanitizer alone is ineffective against certain pathogens, such as C. difficile.
