A patient is admitted with a diagnosis of hypokalemia. Which finding should the nurse prioritize for immediate assessment?
- ABilateral muscle weakness
- BIrregular heart rhythm on telemetry✓
- CDry mucous membranes
- DReports of constipation
Hypokalemia has the most direct and lethal electrophysiologic impact on cardiac myocytes. Potassium is involved in myocardial depolarization and repolarization; its deficiency causes ECG changes (such as U waves, flattened or inverted T waves) and easily provokes dangerous arrhythmias. Compared with non-lethal signs such as muscle weakness, constipation, or dry mucous membranes, arrhythmias are life-threatening, so the nurse should prioritize assessment of the cardiac telemetry monitor.
