Respecting client autonomy is an ethical principle of healthcare. When a client refuses medication, the nurse should first explore the reason (for example, side effects, lack of understanding of the medication, religious beliefs). Only after communication and understanding can appropriate teaching or further assessment be carried out. Forcing the medication violates bodily autonomy, and notifying the provider directly bypasses the nursing assessment step.
