A client is scheduled for a cardiac catheterization using an iodine-based contrast dye. Which laboratory result is most critical to review before the procedure?
- BSerum albumin
- CCreatinine level✓
- DPlatelet count
Iodine-based contrast dye is excreted by the kidneys and is potentially nephrotoxic. In clients with pre-existing renal impairment, contrast use can precipitate contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) and lead to acute renal failure. Therefore, preprocedural assessment of renal function (such as serum creatinine or GFR) is critical for determining whether the client can safely metabolize the contrast dye. The nurse must ensure this value has been reviewed by the provider to prevent serious renal injury.
