Total parenteral nutrition contains high glucose concentrations, which can cause hyperglycemia. Clinical signs include increased urinary output from osmotic diuresis, thirst and dry mucous membranes due to dehydration, confusion from osmotic shifts, and weakness from cellular energy deficits.
