Nalbuphine 是一種鴉片類受體激動劑-拮抗劑（Opioid agonist-antagonist）。雖然其呼吸抑制作用具有「天花板效應（Ceiling effect）」，在劑量達到一定程度後不會進一步增加抑制，但臨床上使用鴉片類藥物時，呼吸狀態仍是絕對的優先評估項目（ABC原則：呼吸優先）。
