A nurse is conducting a safety assessment of a client's home. Which findings increase the risk of falls? (Select all that apply.)
- ALoose area rugs in the living room✓
- BBright, even lighting in hallways
- CLow-profile furniture
- DCluttered walkways with electrical cords✓
- ELack of grab bars in the bathroom✓
A home safety assessment is aimed at fall prevention. Common high-risk factors include environmental clutter (such as loose electrical cords), insufficient floor friction (such as loose rugs), and the lack of support devices (such as no grab bars in the bathroom). These obstacles increase the likelihood of tripping, and a wet bathroom without grab bars makes slipping highly likely. Modifying these environmental factors is key to reducing fall risk in older adults or those with limited mobility. Bright indoor lighting, however, is a positive measure that helps prevent falls and is not a risk factor.
