Chest pain may stem from acute coronary syndrome, pulmonary embolism, or pneumothorax, all of which can rapidly lead to cardiac arrest. Before administering any medication, the nurse must first confirm whether the client's airway is patent, whether ventilation is adequate, and whether circulatory status (blood pressure, cardiac rhythm) is stable, in order to determine the direction of emergency care.
