A nurse is teaching a community group about preventing lead poisoning. Which advice is most important for parents of young children?
- AAllow children to play with old painted furniture
- BWash children's hands frequently✓
- CDo not test the home for lead
- DEncourage consumption of high-fat foods
Lead poisoning produces irreversible damage to the developing neurologic system of young children, primarily via hand-to-mouth ingestion of lead-containing dust in the environment. The cornerstone of prevention is interrupting the route of ingestion; frequent handwashing effectively removes residual lead dust from the hands. In addition, good nutritional status (particularly adequate calcium and iron) competitively inhibits lead absorption, so educating parents on environmental hygiene and dietary guidance is the priority focus of nursing teaching.
