The nurse should first check the tubing for kinks, twisting, or compression to ensure the drainage system is patent. Only after tubing obstruction is ruled out should other causes be considered. Random milking or stripping of the tube is strictly prohibited because it can generate excessive negative pressure and injure lung tissue.
