A nurse is teaching a client who has peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Which of the following statements by the client indicates an understanding of self-care?
- AI will use a heating pad on my feet at night
- BI will elevate my legs above the heart level
- CI should wear tight-fitting socks for compression
- DI will avoid crossing my legs when sitting✓
The pathological hallmark of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is inadequate arterial blood flow. The focus of care is to 'promote circulation' and 'protect the affected limb.' Crossing the legs mechanically compresses blood vessels and further impedes distal blood flow, and must therefore be avoided. In addition, clients with PAD often have decreased sensation, so heat application should be avoided to prevent burns; leg elevation should also be avoided, as it adds gravitational resistance to arterial flow.
