The purpose of sterile technique is to prevent infection. During sterile procedures, the hands must be kept above the waist and within the field of vision, because anything below the waist is considered outside the sterile field and is more easily contaminated. Any contact with sterile items (such as the inner surface of a glove) must be performed carefully so that the sterile surface of the glove is not contaminated. The nurse must remain vigilant; if the sterile state is potentially compromised, the items must be replaced and the sterile field re-established.
