— Explanation ·
Sensory overload refers to the brain's inability to process excessive environmental stimuli. The ICU environment, with its continuous alarms, bright lights, frequent medical procedures, and constant staff movement, imposes a tremendous sensory burden on the patient. This can lead to anxiety, confusion, poor sleep, and delirium. The nurse should reduce stimulation through measures such as decreasing noise, dimming the lights, and scheduling appropriate rest cycles.
