Magnesium sulfate is commonly used to treat preeclampsia, primarily to prevent seizures. The drug has a respiratory depressant adverse effect. When the respiratory rate drops below 12 breaths/min, or when absent deep tendon reflexes or decreased urine output occur, magnesium toxicity is present. Respiratory depression is a life-threatening emergency; the infusion must be stopped immediately and the provider notified so that calcium gluconate can be administered as an antidote.
