Cardiac catheterization is most often performed via femoral artery puncture. Hemostasis at the puncture site is critical postoperatively. The client must keep the affected extremity straight for the prescribed period, avoiding flexion of the hip or knee, to prevent loosening of the pressure dressing, rebleeding at the puncture site, or hematoma formation. The nurse should regularly inspect the puncture site for bleeding or swelling and assess distal limb circulation (pulse, color, temperature).
