A full-thickness burn (third-degree burn) involves all layers of the skin, including the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. Because the depth of injury has destroyed sensory nerve endings, the client typically has no pain at the wound. The wound appearance is dry and leathery, accompanied by formation of eschar from coagulated necrotic tissue. Blistering and severe pain are usually characteristics of second-degree (partial-thickness) burns, where the depth still preserves damaged but sensitive nerve endings.
