A nurse is teaching a client about prescribed oral iron supplements. Which point should the nurse emphasize?
- ALimit fiber intake to prevent diarrhea
- BIron is best absorbed with dairy products
- CTake the medication with an antacid與制酸劑(antacid)同服藥物
- DStools may become black in color✓
Oral iron supplements are commonly used to treat iron-deficiency anemia, but their metabolic byproducts cause gastrointestinal side effects. The nurse's most important responsibility is to educate the client about the drug's properties and absorption mechanism in order to improve adherence and reduce unnecessary anxiety. Clinically, it is particularly important to note that iron causes the stool to darken or appear black after administration; this is caused by the unabsorbed portion being excreted through the intestine and is an expected, benign side effect rather than gastrointestinal bleeding. Educating the client on this point prevents them from panicking and discontinuing the medication on their own.
