Dumping syndrome usually occurs after gastrectomy, when food enters the small intestine too rapidly and provokes a hyperosmotic reaction, producing abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, and palpitations. Dietary teaching priorities include eating small, frequent meals to reduce the load on the gastrointestinal tract; avoiding fluids with meals to slow gastric emptying; adopting a low-carbohydrate, high-protein, high-fat diet; and lying down for 30 minutes after meals to slow gravity-driven rapid passage of food. Small, frequent meals are the most fundamental and effective management strategy.
