A client is scheduled for a cholecystectomy. The client asks about the risks of the surgery. What should the nurse do?
- AExplain all surgical risks in detail to the client
- BCall the anesthesiologist to explain the risks
- CNotify the surgeon that the client has questions about the procedure✓
- DTell the client that the surgery is routine and low-risk
Under both legal and ethical standards, informed consent is the physician's responsibility. The physician must thoroughly explain the purpose of the surgery, its risks, alternative options, and the consequences of not undergoing treatment. The nurse's role is that of a witness and patient advocate, responsible only for confirming that the client has received the explanation and signed the document. If the client still has questions, the nurse should notify the surgeon to clarify; the nurse must not provide the explanation in the physician's place, as doing so risks medical-legal liability.
