Assessment of a victim of domestic violence must be comprehensive. Injuries at various stages of healing indicate ongoing abuse, and the partner's interference with the interview is a classic controlling behavior. Victims often display hypervigilance and withdrawal in their environment and may use minor complaints as a reason for repeated emergency visits, either to seek help or to conceal injuries.
