High-alert medications require an independent double-check by two nurses. Insulin, heparin, intravenous potassium chloride, and chemotherapy agents all fall into this category because dosing errors can have extremely serious consequences. Acetaminophen is not generally considered a high-alert medication and does not require a double-check unless designated as such by a specific institution (which is uncommon).
