The core principle of removing personal protective equipment (PPE) is to go "from outside to inside, from dirty to clean," in order to avoid contact with contaminated surfaces during removal. According to CDC standards, the order of removal is gloves, goggles or face shield, gown, and finally mask. Gloves are removed first because they are the most contaminated, and hand hygiene should be performed immediately afterward to prevent cross-contamination. The mask is removed last, followed again by hand hygiene, to ensure that any potentially airborne particles are eliminated.
