The purpose of surgical asepsis is to eliminate all microorganisms. Principles for maintaining a sterile field include: the sterile field must remain in constant view—once out of sight, it is considered contaminated; anything below the waist is considered contaminated; and the outer 1-inch (about 2.5 cm) border of a sterile field is considered non-sterile. Any wet sterile item will allow external microorganisms to be drawn in through capillary action (strike-through), and must be considered contaminated.
