According to the principles of nursing delegation, the registered nurse (RN) is responsible for complex assessments, nursing diagnoses, and discharge planning. The LPN/LVN can perform standardized technical tasks such as oral medication administration, urinary catheterization, and reinforcement of teaching that the RN has already completed. The initial admission assessment must be performed by the RN because it involves formulation of the plan of care; discharge planning for complex clients also requires the professional judgment of the RN to ensure safe continuity of care.
