Which assessment finding in a postoperative client should the nurse interpret as a sign of potential venous thromboembolism?
- AUnilateral calf swelling and tenderness✓
- BAbsence of pedal pulses
- CCoolness of the lower extremities
- DBilateral pedal edema
Assessment for postoperative venous thromboembolism (DVT) is a key part of postoperative care. The classic signs of DVT include 'unilateral' swelling, pain, redness, or warmth of the lower extremity (and related findings such as Homan's sign). Bilateral edema is usually related to systemic conditions (such as heart or renal failure) rather than DVT. Absence of pulse points to arterial occlusion. The nurse must be alert to these features to prevent the life-threatening risk of pulmonary embolism (PE).
