What is the correct protocol for disposal of sharps?
- ALeave on the tray until the end of the shift
- BRecap before discarding
- CDispose immediately after use✓
- DPlace on the bedside table
Sharps disposal must follow the 'use it and dispose of it immediately' principle. After use, needles, blades, and similar items should be placed directly into a puncture-resistant sharps container. This is the most effective protective measure against needlestick injury. Leaving sharps on a tray or bedside table greatly increases the chance that a colleague or client will be inadvertently injured, raising the risk of bloodborne infection transmission (such as HIV, HBV, or HCV).
