Explanation ·

In the early postoperative period after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), joint stability has not yet been fully restored, the tissues remain swollen, and pain is prominent. Climbing stairs requires substantial quadriceps strength and a high degree of knee flexion, which is a high-intensity activity for a client immediately postoperative and is highly likely to cause joint inflammation, increase the risk of dislocation, or cause excessive fatigue. The nurse should instruct the client to first engage in basic rehabilitation and assistive ambulation through physical therapy (PT) and to learn proper stair-climbing technique under therapist guidance only after sufficient strength has been demonstrated.
