A do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order applies only in the event of cardiopulmonary arrest and prohibits CPR, defibrillation, and endotracheal intubation. It does not mean "withdrawal of care." In clinical practice, the patient is still entitled to the full range of nursing services, including pain relief, symptom management, comfort care, and the preservation of physical, mental, and spiritual dignity. The nurse must clearly distinguish that a DNR is not a refusal of all medical interventions, but a refusal of specific invasive resuscitation procedures.
