The core principle of sterile technique is to keep the sterile field free from contamination by nonsterile items. When opening a sterile package, the outermost flap should be pulled away from the body (C); this ensures that during the procedure the nurse's uniform or body does not inadvertently touch the opened sterile field, thus preventing cross-contamination. Conversely, opening the flap toward the body easily causes the body to pass over the sterile field, resulting in contamination. The inner surface of the sterile item (A) must never be touched, as that is the area the patient will come into contact with. Furthermore, sterile items must be placed on a clean, dry surface above waist level, not merely on "a countertop" (D).
