The safest way to prevent needlestick injuries is to dispose of the needle directly into a puncture-resistant sharps container. Needles must never be bent or broken, as this increases the risk of splashing and injury. The one-handed scoop method should be considered only when immediate disposal is not possible and is not the preferred choice. The sharps container must not be filled beyond its fill line to prevent puncture injuries during disposal.
