Explanation ·

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs, such as lisinopril) carry a risk of inducing angioedema, which may occur anywhere from hours to years after starting therapy. Angioedema is characterized by swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and larynx, and can cause airway obstruction in severe cases. Because the client has a relevant history, the risk of a recurrent and potentially life-threatening airway obstruction is extremely high; the medication must therefore be withheld, and the physician should be consulted about switching to a different antihypertensive agent.
