A nurse is caring for a client with hypoparathyroidism. Which assessment finding requires immediate intervention?
- APositive Chvostek's signChvostek
- BMuscle cramps and tetany
- CNumbness and tingling in the fingers
Hypoparathyroidism leads to decreased serum calcium, which can cause increased neuromuscular excitability. Positive Chvostek's sign, numbness and tingling in the fingers, muscle cramps, and tetany are all manifestations of hypocalcemia. However, laryngospasm is the most dangerous manifestation, as it can lead to airway obstruction and requires immediate intervention, which may include calcium supplementation and maintaining airway patency.
