The main purpose of incentive spirometry is to expand alveoli through maximal inspiration in order to prevent postoperative atelectasis. Correct instructions include placing the patient in a semi-Fowler's position to facilitate chest expansion; inhaling slowly and deeply until the target marker is reached; holding the breath for 3-5 seconds to allow full alveolar expansion; and repeating 10 times per hour. The mouth should be removed from the device on exhalation to avoid blowing carbon dioxide back into the device.
