A client receives a dose of intravenous furosemide. Which finding is the most priority for the nurse to assess after administration?
- AMental status
- BBlood pressure✓
- CSkin turgor
- DSerum potassium level
Furosemide is a potent diuretic, and following IV administration water is excreted rapidly, which can cause an abrupt drop in circulating volume and subsequent hypotension. Therefore, assessing blood pressure after administration to prevent falls and inadequate tissue perfusion is the top priority. Potassium levels, while important, typically take hours to a day to manifest changes and are not the immediate assessment. Skin turgor and mental status are used for longer-term monitoring of dehydration.
