A neutropenic client has a severely reduced neutrophil count and therefore extremely limited ability to fight bacterial and fungal infections, making opportunistic infections highly likely. Everyone who enters the room, including healthcare personnel, visitors, and the client (before and after self-contact), must thoroughly clean their hands. Encouraging activity, allowing visitation (with caution), and providing nutrition are all parts of care, but without strict hand hygiene, these measures may instead become routes of infection.
