A client is prescribed furosemide 40 mg IV push. Which assessment finding requires the nurse to withhold the medication and contact the provider?
- AComplaints of slight thirst
- BBlood pressure of 100/60 mmHg血壓為 100/60 mmHg。
- CUrine output of 50 mL over the last hour過去一小時的尿液輸出量為 50 mL。
- DSerum potassium level of 2.8 mEq/L✓ 正解血清鉀濃度為 2.8 mEq/L。
Furosemide is a potent loop diuretic that causes substantial urinary excretion of potassium. When the serum potassium drops to 2.8 mEq/L (normal range 3.5-5.0), this is dangerous hypokalemia, which can easily induce cardiac arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest; administering the medication in this state is unsafe. Hypotension (B) requires attention but may be acceptable in clients with heart failure; thirst is a common side effect; urine output (C) shows that the medication is effective.
