Sublingual nitroglycerin tablets must be absorbed through the mucous membrane to be effective. The correct method is to place the tablet under the tongue, not to swallow it. The medication is sensitive to light and air and must be stored in its original dark-colored bottle. If pain persists, one tablet may be taken every 5 minutes, up to a maximum of three tablets; if there is still no improvement, this may indicate myocardial infarction and the client should seek immediate medical care.
