Hyperthyroidism causes an abnormal increase in systemic metabolic rate. Increased sympathetic activity produces tachycardia, palpitations, and anxiety. Hypermetabolism causes heat intolerance and excessive sweating. Clients with Graves' disease commonly present with exophthalmos. Weight loss (rather than weight gain) and tachycardia (rather than bradycardia) are typical manifestations.
