Digoxin is a cardiotonic agent with a negative chronotropic effect. The most life-threatening risk prior to administration is bradycardia; if the heart rate falls below 60 beats per minute, cardiac output may be inadequate or a dysrhythmia may be precipitated. The nurse must therefore count the apical pulse for a full minute, which is more accurate than measuring the radial pulse.
