Alendronate is a bisphosphonate used for osteoporosis. To prevent serious esophagitis and ulceration, it must be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass (180-240 mL) of plain water, and the client must remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes. The tablet should not be crushed, chewed, or sucked, and should never be taken with food, other beverages, calcium, or antacids.
